Hundreds gather in Bristol for ACORN Members’ Convention

The last Saturday in August saw ACORN’s inaugural Members’ Convention in Bristol.

Around 250 ACORN members from the length and breadth of England and Wales came together at the Malcolm X Centre, Bristol, for an action packed day of workshops, speeches, training and social events.

We were joined by guest speakers from the Fire Brigades Union, Living Rent (Scotland), ACORN International founder and chief organizer, Wade Rathke, and delegates from Canada, who shared experiences from the field and ideas on how our respective unions can support each other.

Members ran sessions and discussions looking at our local campaigns, sharing skills and organising lessons that can help us win bigger and better for our communities.

ACORN’s National Chair, Chelsea Phillips, and Head Organiser, Nick Ballard, gave inspiring addresses, taking aim at the rich and powerful, and reasserting our commitment to organising and fighting for power for our people.

The day was rounded up by a rousing launch of our new, union-wide campaign (watch this space), and a lively eviction resistance training – which saw around 200 members link arms and prevent a group of ‘bailiffs’ from entering the community centre.
