It’s been a big week in ACORN’s campaign for a Bailiff Free Britain, with two HUGE wins for working class communities across Wales and Bristol.

Today, the Welsh Government has announced plans to create a fairer buffer period of 63 days between a missed council tax payment and court enforcement, up from the punitive 7 days currently in place.
This comes after a consultation on council tax collection, which ACORN Cardiff mobilised an overwhelming response to, with door knocking, stalls and online campaigning.
Over the channel, ACORN Bristol also announced a significant victory, after council leader Tony Dyer agreed to the principle of stopping the use of bailiffs to collect any forms of council debt from people on council tax support, people on benefits, and working people on low incomes.
We estimate that one in three Bristolians will be protected from bailiff visits by this change.
This comes after nearly a year of campaign against the council’s use of bailiffs back in the city, even including marching on the council with a knight in full medieval armour.
These wins are a significant early step forward in ACORN’s England and Wales campaign calling for the end of the use of bailiffs to collect council tax debt and a fairer council tax system, which was launched two weeks ago.
