Bailiffs beaten from Barnsley to Bristol

ACORN members Kathryn and Tony were told they couldn’t have just 4 more days in their home before their new place was ready.

Kathryn uses a wheelchair, and needed just a few more days before she could move into a council house that was suitable, but her landlord – who owns 90 homes in the area – refused and sent county court bailiffs to turf Kathryn and Tony out.

But ACORN Sheffield members mobilisied and stood shoulder-to-shoulder. It was the bailiffs who were sent packing, and our members got some vital extra time in their home. Watch the video of the eviction resistance here!

Meanwhile in Bristol, Muhubo and her family were threatened with eviction by their landlord.

She called her fellow ACORN members who turned up to block the landlord who was trying to kick them out and change the locks.

But we stopped it – and then negotiated an extension so they won’t be out on the street!

Muhubo said: “[the eviction] was incredibly stressful and difficult, and having people like you by our side made such a huge difference.”

“You didn’t just help us with practical things, you gave us comfort, encouragement, and a sense of hope when we needed it most. We’ll never forget the kindness and understanding you’ve shown.”

A few days later a second eviction was successfully stopped in Bristol. Housing association, Bromford, tried to evict Paul despite him making a reasonable offer to pay back his rent arrears, and being open to a negotiation on re-housing with Bromford after his son and daughter have had to move out of the property due to the risk of eviction.

On top of all this the property is in dire need of repairs including structural issues, a kitchen that hasn’t been replaced for over 13 years and double glazing which doesn’t work and requires replacement.

ACORN members turned out to support Paul, and upon seeing this the bailiff didn’t even leave the car, meaning the eviction didn’t go ahead.

Bromford wants to now apply for a high court eviction, but we won’t let that happen.
