25000 Newcastle residents safe from bailiffs after ACORN win

25,000 residents who receive council tax support in Newcastle are now safe from bailiffs following ACORN pressure on the council.

ACORN Newcastle members put public questions to the council and pushed the Greens to put forward a motion against the use of bailiffs for those on council tax support.

The ‘Fair Council Tax Collection’ motion passed, meaning residents across Newcastle in receipt of the Council Tax Support scheme will be exempt from a referral to bailiffs for enforcement of council tax debt.

They said,“We’re chasing bailiffs out of Newcastle for good. We have started with protecting 25000 people on council tax support from bailiffs but we want to push this further.”

“Next we are aiming to protect everyone on benefits from getting a bailiff knocking on their door. ACORN is the place to be to get this work done and we’ll keep fighting until bailiffs are gone for good.”
